The Boathouse
The property where the Boathouse now stands was owned by Portuguese-American commercial fisherman Joe C. Monise from 1919 to 1954. Born in Sausalito in 1891, Monise moved to San Diego in 1907 and worked in the fishing industry for 47 years. During his career, he owned several well-known tuna boats, including the Mariner and Invader.
The front house, built in 1918, is one of only three remaining homes in La Playa associated with local Portuguese ship captains. At the time of its construction, the home had direct access to the water—reflecting its deep ties to San Diego’s working waterfront. Located near Kellogg Beach and the San Diego Yacht Club, the property sits in the heart of the city’s historic maritime neighborhood.
The Martini family restored the house and added the Boathouse in 2025. As only the third owners, they are proud stewards of the home’s nautical legacy.
The current owner is an antique boat aficionado. The lower level of the Boathouse serves as a working shop dedicated to the restoration of antique wooden boats. Above, the guest quarters are finished in a minimalist, modern beach motif—clean lines, natural textures, and subtle nautical cues that honor the spirit of the sea.
